  1. To change so as to match or fit; cause to correspond.
  2. To bring into proper relationship.
  3. To adapt or conform, as to new conditions: "unable to adjust themselves to their environment" (Karl A. Menninger). See synonyms at adapt.
  4. To bring the components of into a more effective or efficient calibration or state: adjust the timing of a car's engine.
  5. In chiropracty, to manipulate (the spine and other body structures) to treat disorders and restore normal function of the nervous system.
  6. To decide how much is to be paid on (an insurance claim).
v.intr.
  1. To adapt oneself; conform.
  2. To achieve a psychological balance with regard to one's external environment, one's needs, and the demands of others.

Three new uses of this verb entered the language in the 20th century:

1. Intransitive, with or without to: to adapt oneself to something
(She seemed to have adjusted to her new status with little difficulty—L. Niven, 1983
She needs time to adjust—S. King, 1979).


2. Intransitive, standing for passive: to become adjusted or be capable of being adjusted.
The lights were too bright and it took my eyes a long time to adjust—Southern Ocean Review, New Zealand English 2004 [Old English (up to 1150)C].


3. Transitive, with for, in the presentation of statistical information
(Lenders vary as to when they adjust your repayments for tax relief—What Mortgage, 1986).
