Biography

One of Italy's best-loved artists, Adriano Celentano has been equally successful in film and music. Whether singing Elvis Presley-inspired rock, as he did as a member of the Rock Boys in 1957, or romantic balladry, Celentano found a dedicated market for his music. Reaching the top of the Italian music charts with his debut single "Il Tuo Bacio e Come un Skirt" in 1959, he matched its success with the million-selling "24000 Baci (24,000 Kisses)" in 1961; "Il Ragazzo Della Via Gluck," which went on to be translated and re-recorded in 18 languages, in 1966; and Prisencolinensinainciusol in 1972.

Celentano's albums have been similarly embraced. His debut album, Non Mi Dir, reached the top position of Italy's charts in 1965. His album Soli spent 58 weeks on the charts in 1978-1979. Although he left music for nearly two decades to focus on his career as an actor, Celentano later recaptured the momentum of his early career. His comeback album, Mina + Celentano, was a major hit in 1998 while his second album, Francamente Me Ne Infischio, based on the television-variety show that he agreed to host in 1999, spent several weeks at the top of Italy's album charts. Esco di Rado -- E Parlo Ancora Meno, the third album since Celentano returned to music, sold more than 600,000 copies before its release.

Celentano continued to balance his music career with his work in Italian cinema. As an actor, he made his theatrical debut in such movies as Dai, Johnny, Dai!, I Ragazzi del Jukebox, I Frenetici in 1959, and Fellini's classic La Dolce Vita in 1960. His subsequent screen appearances included roles in such films as The Sin, Rugantino, Give Me Five, Il Bisbetico Domato, and Segni Parsticolari: Bellissimo. Having made his debut as a producer and director with the 1974 film Yuppi Du, Celentano wen on to direct such films as L'atra Meta Del Cielo and Geppo Il Folle. His first long-term experience with television came in late 1987 when he agreed to host the variety show Fantastico 8. ~ Craig Harris, All Music Guide

Biography

A true superstar of Italian pop music, Adriano Celentano essayed virtually every genre and style, from rock 'n' roll to rap, and was able to extend his success to films and television. His first public success was associated with his participation in the first Italian Rock 'n' Roll Festival in his native Milan in 1957. The song "Ciao Ti Dirò" became an immediate hit. His 1959 song "Il Tuo Bacio è Come Un Rock" topped the Italian hit-parade, and since then Celentano went on to produce at least one hit single every year. By 1960 he was already a recognizable face, and Federico Fellini invited him to make a brief appearance as a rock 'n' roll singer in La Dolce Vita (Celentano made his first film appearance in I Frenetici two years earlier.)

In 1961 he participated for the first time in the Sanremo festival, the biggest annual showcase for Italian pop music. His song "Ventiquattromila Baci" won only a second prize but later sold a million copies and topped Italian charts. Such a disparity caused controversy, and the Sanremo festival even became subject to a Parliamentary hearing. The same year Celentano founded his own record label Clan Celentano, in order to have complete artistic control over his music. Stai Lontana Da Me, released in May of 1962, was the first record by the Clan. In 1963, during the shooting of Il Monaco Di Monza he met his future wife, actress Claudia Mori. They got married the next year.

Though the singer made regular appearances in film, he didn't get much critical attention until Serafino (1969), directed by the veteran comedy-maker Pietro Germi. With the 1974 Yuppi-du Celentano debuted as a film director. He also wrote, produced and starred in it. The original soundtrack, also composed by Celentano, went to No.1 on Italian charts as did the title song. The next ten years were the most successful for his film career. Such comedies as Il Bisbetico Domato (1980) and Innamorato Pazzo (1981), directed by Castellano and Pipolo and co-starring the beautiful Ornella Muti, became megahits in Italy and successfully played in some other European countries. However, his subsequent comedies were increasingly formulaic; they relied too heavily on the presence of beautiful actresses, and Celentano's acting verged on self-conscious mugging.

In 1985 Celentano wrote, directed, scored and starred in the film Joan Lui, his most ambitious project, an allegorical fable about the Second Coming of Christ. Dismissed by critics as a self-indulgent big-budget musical extravaganza, the film also flopped commercially, and the singer lost interest in cinema. In 1987 he ventured into television with a weekly show named Fantastico. He proved to be very successful as a TV host, as nobody could remain indifferent to his witty and provocative speeches. On the wave of this success he released the album La Pubblica Ottusità, that went to No. 1 in Italy. The same year he wrote the book Il Profeta e i Farisei ("The Prophet and the Pharisees") based on his experiences on television. In 1991 he released the album Il Re Degli Ignoranti, as well a book by the same title. In 1992 Celentano launched a new TV show, Svalutation, that became famous for its unpredictability and improvisation. ~ Yuri German, All Movie Guide

Biography

Celentano was born in Milan at 14 Via Gluck (about which he later wrote the song "Il ragazzo della via Gluck"). His parents were from Puglia and had moved north to work.[1]

Before starting his singing career, in Milan the metropolitan legend remembered Celentano as student of Ghigo Agosti (European rock pioneer) during his music show in north Italy around 1955-1956 with the exordial guitarist Giorgio Gaber.[clarification needed]

Heavily influenced by his idol Elvis Presley and the 1950s rock revolution, he is also known as the most famous dancer of the Hula hoop fad. For the last 40 years he has retained his popularity in Italy, selling millions of records and appearing in numerous TV shows and movies. In the latter respect, he has also been a creator of a comic genre, with his characteristic walking and his facial expressions. For the most part, his films were commercially successful; indeed in the 1970s and part of the 1980s, he was the king of the Italian box office in low budget movies. As an actor, critics point to Serafino (1968), directed by Pietro Germi, as his best performance.

As a director he frequently casts Ornella Muti, Eleonora Giorgi and his wife Claudia Mori. He and Claudia are the parents of Rosita, Rosalinda Celentano, most notable to worldwide audiences for playing the Satan character in Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ, and Giacomo Celentano. He also often works as a host on several Italian television shows.

He has released 40 albums: 29 studio albums, 3 live albums and 8 compilations. His most famous song is "Azzurro", with lyrics by Paolo Conte, released in 1968 and covered by numerous musicians since.

Adriano Celentano is a vegetarian since 2005 as he defends animal rights.[2]

To date, the singer sold 70 million records.
