Aenne Biermann

Photography Encyclopedia: Aenne Biermann

Biermann, Aenne (née Sternfeld; 1898-1933), German photographer and major exponent of the ‘new photography’ of the 1920s. Her wealthy commercial background enabled her to engage intensively with contemporary aesthetic debates. After marriage, and the birth of two children, she focused initially on her domestic surroundings, though friendship with Rudolf Hundt encouraged her to explore the medium's wider possibilities. She described her early family and travel pictures as ‘vagrant photography’; yet the images of her children and their milieu are imbued with the visual language of the New Vision and New Objectivity: tight cropping, and a feel for the structure of materials and the tactility of surfaces. Detailed studies of plants, minerals, and everyday objects, with metaphorical undertones, also reflect the prevailing 1920s aesthetic. Biermann participated in many exhibitions, including Film und Foto in Stuttgart in 1929. In 1930 Franz Roh published a monograph about her.
