You might say the African Development Foundation (ADF) is the Small Business Administration for a continent. A US federal government agency, ADF provides funding to community-based, non-government organizations and entrepreneurs in around 20 African countries. It specifically targets small to midsized African-owned businesses with high growth potential, particularly agricultural producers and processors. Grants -- most of which are between $50,000 and $250,000 -- support projects focused on developing micro, small, and midsized enterprises, enhancing trade and investment opportunities, and preventing and mitigating HIV/AIDS. Since it was established by Congress in 1980, ADF has funded around 1,100 projects.
