(ăf'tər-măth') pronunciation
n.
  1. A consequence, especially of a disaster or misfortune: famine as an aftermath of drought.
  2. A period of time following a disastrous event: in the aftermath of war.
  3. A second growth or crop in the same season, as of grass after mowing.

[AFTER + obsolete math, mowing (from Old English mǣth).]

The original sense in agriculture (a second or later mowing or the crop of grass which springs up after the first mowing) is 16th century (along with aftercrop and aftergrass) and the figurative sense is 17th century. In its figurative meaning, aftermath usually denotes something unpleasant or unwelcome in itself or something that follows on an unpleasant or unwelcome event (such as war or disease), but these unfavourable connotations are not present in the literal meaning. Examples:
Depression is sometimes an immediate aftermath of completing a piece of work—A. Stoor, 1979
In total, nine ambulances, four paramedics, a rapid response car and a rapid response doctor were needed to deal with the aftermath of the violence—Birmingham Post, 2007.

Previous:affix, affinity, affect, effect
