Afternoon is the time of day from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM - according to multiple dictionaries. However, other dictionaries define it more loosely to include time from lunchtime to evening. As the term has been in use since before the common man carried a timepiece, more generalized timing, such as lunch time, and supper time would then have been more practical as a means to define the time period.
The term should not be confused with "after noon" (two separate words), which is a translation of the Latin "post meridiem" (p.m.) as used in the 12-hour clock, meaning a time of day from noon to midnight.
In Australia and New Zealand, the word "arvo" is a slang term for afternoon.
