Biography

Alan Ladd was a short (5' 5"), unexpressive lead actor with icy good looks and a resonant voice. He worked a variety of odd jobs -- in addition to radio and in local theater -- before entering films in his late teens as a bit player and grip. In the mid-'30s, he began appearing regularly in minor screen roles. Hollywood agent Sue Carol discovered him and began trumpeting him as star material, and the actor eventually landed a major role in This Gun for Hire (1942) opposite Veronica Lake. He quickly became a major star, and was teamed with Lake in other films -- all hits. Ladd and Carol married in 1942, and she remained his agent for the rest of his life. On the Top Ten box-office attractions list in 1947, 1953, and 1954, he continued to star in films throughout the '50s, but -- with the exception of Shane (1953) -- few of his films were noteworthy; most were entertaining adventures featuring Ladd bare-chested and in fistfights, but, by the late '50s, their appeal was waning. Ladd was the father of actors Alan Ladd Jr. and David Ladd, and former child actress Alana Ladd. He died in 1964. ~ All Movie Guide

Alan Walbridge Ladd (September 3, 1913January 29, 1964) was an American film actor. He was famous for his emotionless demeanor and small stature (reports of his height vary from 5'2" to 5'5", with 5'5" being the most generally accepted today). In the majority of his films, he played either the hero or a bad guy with a conscience.

Life and career

Ladd was born in Hot Springs, Arkansas to English immigrant parents.

After first becoming a star with his performance as a hitman with a conscience in This Gun for Hire (1942), he became most famous for his starring role as a gunfighter in the classic 1953 western Shane. Ladd also made Quigley's Top 10 Stars of the Year List 3 times, 1947, 1953 and 1954. In 1954 he starred alongside Peter Cushing and Patrick Troughton in the British film The Black Knight, unusually cast as a medieval swashbuckling hero, and surrounded by veterans of British films. Unfortunately, this film was being made just as Shane was becoming a gigantic critical and commercial hit, and Ladd missed out on the public events surrounding his most popular success.

He was sometimes listed as Allan Ladd in credits.

Ladd also worked in radio, most notably the syndicated series Box 13. This series ran from 1948 to 1949 and was produced by Ladd's own company, Mayfair Productions.

Alan Ladd was married to his agent and former silent film actress Sue Carol, who was also his manager. Actress Jordan Ladd is his granddaughter. His son Alan Ladd, Jr. by first wife Midge Harrold became a motion picture executive and producer founding The Ladd Company. Another son, David Ladd, married Charlie's Angels star Cheryl Ladd.

He died in Palm Springs, California of an acute overdose of alcohol and sedatives at the age of 50, a probable suicide. On his death in 1964, Ladd was entombed in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California.
