Morocco became independent from France in 1956.

However, it was unified as a country long ago. The Alaouite dynasty was in power in Morocco from 1666. 1956 was when the national country borders that exist today were created.

In Arabic, they are called Alaoui (علوي). In English, they are called "Alaouite".

Mohammed VI is the king of the kingdom of Morocco, he was born August 21, 1963 in Rabat, is the twenty-third monarch of the Alaouite dynasty, and the third to bear the title of king of Morocco, since July 23, 1999.

Which dynasty?

Morocco has been founded and re-founded several times. The first such founding was by the Idrissids who ruled from 788 C.E. - 974 C.E.

The current Alaouite Dynasty came to power in 1631 and has ruled continuously since then. However from 1912-1956, central Morocco was a French Protectorate. The French allowed the Kings to continue in power, but as a secondary authority to their own. It was only King Mohammed V who reclaimed Moroccan Independence in 1956.
