Alauda probably comes from the Latin root: laudo, which means;
to praise or extoll. And it could even be related to the Italian
word: laude, which means; a poem, hymn, or devotional song. Avensis
is Latin and means, among other things: to carry away. This name
was probably chosen as the scientific name for the skylark because
the male bird flies very high, up to 100 meters (300 feet), before
it sings its song, apparently, to the heavens.
