A lake of central Italy southeast of Rome in an extinct volcanic crater.

 

 
 
(älbä') , crater lake, 2 sq mi (5.2 sq km), central Italy, in the Alban Hills SE of Rome. It is c.6 mi (9.7 km) in circumference and c.560 ft (170 m) deep. An underground tunnel built in the 4th cent. B.C. is still its only outlet. Alba Longa was located near the lake. Castel Gandolfo, the Pope's summer residence, is located there. South of the lake is Albano Laziale, a small town on the Appian Way, noted for the beautiful villas and several tombs built there by the ancient Romans.

Lake Albano (41.75° N 12.665° E) is a small volcanic crater lake in the Alban Hills of Lazio, 15 miles southeast of Rome. On a height overlooking it is Castel Gandolfo, where the Pope has a villa.

It was known to the Roman Empire as Albanus Lacus. It is vicinity stood Alba Longa.

The lake is the deepest (170 m) in Lazio. It is about 3,5 km long by 2.3 km wide, formed by the overlapping union of two volcanic craters, an origin by the ridge in its center, which ruises to a depth of 70 meters.

It hosted the rowing events of the 1960 Summer Olympic Games that were held at Rome.
