Albert Paris Gütersloh

Gütersloh, Albert Paris, pseudonym of Albert Conrad Kiehtreiber (Vienna, 1887-1973, Baden nr. Vienna), a gifted painter, worked under Max Reinhardt as a stage designer. In the 1914-18 War he was in the official Press H.Q. at Vienna. After the war he continued his artistic activities, in 1929 became a professor at the Kunstgewerbeschule, and, after being forced out of office in 1938, from 1945 at the Wiener Akademie der Bildenden Künste, whose rector he was in the mid-1950s. He was also active as a literary Expressionist, contributing to Die Aktion; he wrote the novels Die tanzende Törin (1910, revised in 1913), an Expressionist work, reissued with a postscript by W. Rasch in 1973, Innozenz oder der Sinn und Fluch der Unschuld, and Der Lügner unter Bürgern (both 1922 and together receiving the Fontane Prize for 1923). His principal novel, the work of many years, is Sonne und Mond. Ein historischer Roman aus der Gegenwart (1962, reissued with an essay by H. Heißenbüttel, 2nd edn., 1984). It was followed by Die Fabel von der Freundschaft. Ein sokratischer Roman (1969; on Faust and Mephistopheles). As a writer he is noted for his eccentric, convoluted style, often described as baroque. He was a close friend of H. von Doderer. Collected editions of his work include Zur Situation der modernen Kunst (1963) and Zwischen den Zeiten. Texte und Miniaturen (1967). A volume of poetry, Treppe ohne Haus oder Seele ohne Leib. Späte Gedichte, was published posthumously in 1974 and Beispiele. Schriften zur Kunst. Bilder. Werkverzeichnis, with an introduction by H. Hutter, in 1977. His correspondence with Doderer, Briefwechsel 1928-1962, appeared in 1986.
