(b Fortaleza, 6 July 1864; d Rio de Janeiro, 16 Oct 1920). Brazilian composer. From 1888 to 1895 he studied in Rome, Berlin and Paris. He then worked in support of Brazilian music as a teacher, conductor and composer in Rio de Janeiro, playing a major role in Brazilian musical nationalism and being one of the first to use Brazilian elements in his works (e.g. Série brasileira, 1892). These include operas, orchestral and chamber pieces, church music and over 80 songs.
