Alpha Bank is the second-largest bank in Greece (after National Bank of Greece). It provides business and personal banking services through about 450 branches in Greece and hundreds more in Cyprus, Albania, Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, and Ukraine, as well as in New York, London, and Jersey in the UK Channel Islands. In addition to loans, deposit accounts, and credit cards, the Alpha Bank group also offers asset management, investment banking, private banking, insurance, brokerage, leasing, and factoring. In 2011 the company rejected a takeover bid by National Bank of Greece but then agreed to merge with Eurobank. However, Alpha later shot down that merger deal.

Alpha Bank is the second largest bank in Greece after National Bank of Greece, with 450 branches throughout the country. It also has a subsidiary and branch in London, and branches and subsidiaries throughout the Balkans (see "International expansion" below). Founded in 1879, it has been controlled by the Costopoulos family since the very beginning. Currently the bank is chaired by Ioannis Costopoulos, who is the grandson of the original founder John F. Costopoulos, and the nephew of Stavros Costopoulos, Foreign Minister in the liberal government of Georgios Papandreou.[citation needed]
