An assault ship with a flight deck may resemble an aircraft
carrier, but its purpose is to deliver marines and their equipment
for amphibious attacks. Many navies use assault ships, but not all
of them have a flight deck. An assault ship with its own flight
facilities spares the aircraft carriers from the task of carrying
marine air support. An assault ship cannot operate the
high-performance combat aircraft that an aircraft carrier has, but
it does not need them for the job it does. An assault ship does not
fight enemy ships at sea. Its purpose is to land on an enemy shore
and hold it until reinforcements arrive.
