The Amphicar was first produced in 1961. It was the first amphibious vehicle ever mass-produced for sale to the public, and was designed by Hanns Trippel in Germany.

The only real boat car of the past was the Amphicar. The Amphicar had a top speed on water of 7 knots (8 mph). It had a top highway speed of 70 mph. Some modern amphibious cars that can travel on water have a top speed of around (45 mph) 39 knots.

The Amphicar built in the 1960s. It was not a very good car or a very good boat but it had propellers and could be driven slowly into the water.

Old Beetles were said to float, "AWHILE". But all cars would sink. Only the Amphicar 1961-1968 are half boat/half car.
