anasarcous an'a·sar'cous (-sär'kəs) adj.Extensive subcutaneous edema; an expression of a generalized edema such as occurs in congestive heart failure. There is diffuse subcutaneous swelling which is cool to the touch and retains the imprint of a fingertip after pressure is released—hence ‘pitting edema’. The principal locations are the intermandibular space and the ventral aspects of the neck and trunk. In horses the limbs are also commonly involved.

Anasarca (or "extreme generalized edema") is a medical symptom characterised by widespread swelling of the skin due to effusion of fluid into the extracellular space.
A good mnemonic for anasarka is: Anasarka is like a parka, all over.
It is usually caused by either congestive cardiac failure, liver failure (cirrhosis of the liver) or renal failure/disease.
It can also be created from the administration of exogenous intravenous fluid.
Certain plant-derived anticancer chemotherapeutic agents, such as docetaxel, cause anasarca through a poorly understood capillary leak syndrome.
This symptom is also called leucophlegmatia.
