an'a·sar'cous (-kəs) adj.

Extensive subcutaneous edema; an expression of a generalized edema such as occurs in congestive heart failure. There is diffuse subcutaneous swelling which is cool to the touch and retains the imprint of a fingertip after pressure is released—hence ‘pitting edema’. The principal locations are the intermandibular space and the ventral aspects of the neck and trunk. In horses the limbs are also commonly involved.

Anasarca
ICD-10 R60.1
ICD-9 782.3
A child suffering from anasarca brought on by nephrosis associated with malaria

Anasarca, also known as "extreme generalized edema" is a medical condition characterised by widespread swelling of the skin due to effusion of fluid into the extracellular space. [1]

It is usually caused by liver failure (cirrhosis of the liver) or renal failure/disease and severe malnutrition/protein deficiency. The increase in salt and water retention caused by low cardiac output can also result in anasarca as a long term maladaptive response.

It can also be created from the administration of exogenous intravenous fluid.

Certain plant-derived anticancer chemotherapeutic agents, such as docetaxel, cause anasarca through a poorly understood capillary leak syndrome.
