(b Budapest, 21 Dec 1953). Hungarian pianist. He studied in Budapest and with George Malcolm in London. His Budapest début in 1972 was followed by tours abroad. He has acquired a reputation not only in the standard Classical and Romantic repertory but in contemporary music and in Bach, where his recordings of the ‘48’ and other works have won praise for their stylistic grasp. He is active as a chamber musician.

András Schiff (born 21 December 1953) is a Hungarian-born British classical pianist.

Schiff was born in Budapest and began piano lessons at the age five with Elisabeth Vadasz. Schiff studied at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, and later in London with George Malcolm. He emigrated from Hungary in 1979.[1]

In 1999 he formed his own chamber orchestra, the Cappella Andrea Barca. He has since appeared as a conductor with many major orchestras.

Schiff is one of the best-known living interpreters of J.S. Bach, Franz Schubert, and Robert Schumann. He has also recorded and championed the work of Leoš Janáček and Sándor Veress. He has recently recording all thirty-two of Beethoven's piano sonatas. He has previously recorded for the Decca and Teldec labels, among others.

Schiff has been a British citizen since 2001. He is married to the violinist Yuuko Shiokawa.
