Biography

The music of Andrea Gabrieli (ca. 1532-1585) is the cornerstone of the Venetian polychoral style of the late Renaissance/early Baroque period. Details of his early training and work are not definite, but it is presumed that he worked with Orlando di Lassus (there are certain similarities in their music). Gabrieli spent the last 20 years of his life as organist at St. Mark's cathedral in Venice. He wrote in all the current forms and styles of the day, including masses, motets, madrigals, theater music, and keyboard ricercars, toccatas, and canzona. His nephew Giovanni carried on his work at the cathedral. ~ Patsy Morita, Rovi
