(b Brescia, 28 March 1779; d Belleville, 30 Dec 1821). Italian composer. He studied the violin in Parma and composition with Cimarosa and attempted to establish himself as a dramatic composer in Paris; of his seven operas, only Aladin (1821) achieved success. He was most admired for his chamber music, showing the influence of Haydn.
