Angiotech Pharmaceuticals is teaching old devices new tricks. The firm develops medical products that combine devices with drugs to make them more effective with fewer side effects. Its flagship product is the TAXUS drug-eluting stent, which Boston Scientific sells and for which it pays Angiotech royalties. The stent is used to open up diseased arteries, and the drug coating keeps scar tissue from forming and creating a new blockage. With the acquisition of American Medical Instruments Holdings (AMI), Angiotech expanded its capabilities to include manufacturing and marketing of single-use medical products, including sutures, needles, and catheters used in interventional radiology, ophthalmology, and surgery.
