(ə-nŏm'ə-lē) pronunciation
n., pl., -lies.
  1. Deviation or departure from the normal or common order, form, or rule.
  2. One that is peculiar, irregular, abnormal, or difficult to classify: "Both men are anomalies: they have . . . likable personalities but each has made his reputation as a heavy" (David Pauly).
  3. Astronomy. The angular deviation, as observed from the sun, of a planet from its perihelion.
anomalistic a·nom'a·lis'tic adj.
anomalistically a·nom'a·lis'ti·cal·ly adv.

An angle that gives the position of an object in an elliptical orbit at any given time. The true anomaly is the angle between the periapsis of an orbit and the object's current orbital position, measured from the body being orbited and in the direction of orbital motion. The mean anomaly is what the true anomaly would be if the object orbited in a perfect circle at constant speed. The mean anomaly is 0° at periapsis and 180° at apoapsis, just as for the true anomaly, but at other points along the orbit the values of the mean and true anomalies differ. The mean anomaly at a given time is often used as an orbital element. The eccentric anomaly is an angle related to both the true anomaly and the mean anomaly that is encountered when solving Kepler's equation.

Abnormality or deviation. Pronounced "uh-nom-uh-lee," it is a favorite word among computer people when complex systems produce output that is inexplicable. See software conflict and anomaly detection.

Antonyms: conformity, normality, regularity, standard, usual, usualness

Journal of unusual events of a Fortean kind, such as UFOs, sea monsters, mysterious disappearances, and strange coincidences. Founded in 1969 by researcher John A. Keel. Last known address: PO Box 351, Murray Hill Station, New York, NY 10016.

A term describing the incidence when the actual result under a given set of assumptions is different from the expected result. An anomaly provides evidence that a given assumption or model does not hold in practice. The model can either be a relatively new or older model.

Investopedia Says:
Anomalies often occur with respect to asset pricing models, in particular the capital asset pricing model (CAPM). Although the CAPM was derived by using innovative assumptions and theories, it often does a poor job in predicting stock returns. The numerous market anomalies that were observed after the formation of the CAPM helped form the basis for those wishing to disprove the model.

Although the model may not hold up in empirical and practical tests, that is not to say that the model does not hold some utility.

Marked deviation from normal. For specific anomalies see under anatomical location.

  • developmental a. — absence, deformity or excess of body parts as the result of faulty development of the embryo.
  • lethal a. — a defect which is incompatible with life and leads to the natural death or euthanasia on humane grounds of the neonate concerned.
  • sex-limited a. — limited in its occurrence by the sex of the neonate, e.g. cryptorchidism.
  • sex-linked a. — the gene responsible for the defect is located on the X or the Y chromosome, the sex determinative ones.
