Hermodice carunculata is the scientific, Latin or binomial name for the bearded fireworm.
This marine worm sports an attractive color combination of orange body with white bristles. The bristles are the reason for the "bearded" part of the worm's name. The worm's native range is along the reefs in the tropical and mid-Atlantic Ocean. But it also may be found in the Mediterranean Sea.
Flaring out its irritating bristles is the first reaction of a frightened bearded fireworm (Hermodice carunculata).
The worm tends to be no more than about 1.9-3.9 inches (5-10 centimeters) in length. But it may be possible to find bearded fireworms as long as 13.8 inches (35 centimeters) in length.
But no matter what the length, this marine's worm act of flaring out its bristles must be considered seriously by any nearby observer. Specifically, the beautiful white bristles cause an irritating, burning reaction when they make contact with human body parts. The discomfort is increased further if the person in question is particularly sensitive and therefore becomes dizzy and nauseous.
It always helps to remove as quickly as possible any bristles that become lodged in the skin. Generally, adhesive tape applied to and then removed from the area is all that is needed to dislodge the offending bristle.
