Araria is a city and a municipality in Araria district in the state of Bihar, India.

Geography
Araria is located at 26°09′N 87°31′E / 26.15°N 87.52°E[1]. It has an average elevation of 47 metres (154 feet). Araria is situated at the northern part of Purnia and Madhepura in Bihar. Borders of Araria are surrounded by Nepal in northern side, Kishanganj in eastern side and Supaul at south-west side. The district came into existence by division of Purnia district on Makar Sankranti day of 1990. District border is adjacent to border of Nepal, so the district is important in terms of security. Jogbani is the last point of Araria and after that Morang district of Nepal starts.
Transportation
Both rail and road links are available. Araria contains two bus terminals one at "Zero Mile" and second in the city. Buses for most of the districts of Bihar are available as well as for internal villages and blocks too. NH 57 runs through the district.
Railways is in the form of Broad-gauge. Which is newly built. This broad gauge service has been inaugurated by Union Railway Minister Mr.Laloo Prasad Yadav on 5 June 2008. Now tri-weekly trains are available from Jogbani to Kolkata via Katihar. Katihar is a big and important junction from there trains to all important cities of India are available.

Health
The health and medical facilities of this district are very poor. Even after Araria formed as a district in 1990, the District Hospital is in a dilapidated state and most of the people of district go to the nearby district of Purnea for treatment.
The prevalent diseases of this zone are Kalazar, leprosy, gastritis, osteoarthritis etc. This district also struggles with the flood and disease.
Religion
Araria is among those districts where major religions like Hindu and Muslims are in balanced equation.
Literature
The Great Hindi and regional language writer Phanishwar Nath 'Renu' was born in this district at Aurahi Hingna village where his family still live. At present a magazine "Parti Palar" is being published from there.
Movie
Famous movie Teesri Kasam got shooted in villages of Araria. It was Basu Bhattacharya film, based on book of Phanishwar Nath 'Renu' named 'Mare Gaye Gulfam', starrer Raj Kapoor and Waheeda Rehman.
Business
The big business tycoon and chairman of Sahara Group, very famous Subrata Roy was born in Ashram muhhalla of the town. His house got rennovataed lately. Many of his relatives are still there.
Art
World famous Magician Salil Kumar Kundu who bills himself as Solyl Kundu, has been born in Araria. He studied and passed from Araria Higher Secondary School.
Demographics
As of 2001[update] India census,[3] Araria had a population of 60,594. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Araria has an average literacy rate of 50%, lower than the national average of 59.5%; with 62% of the males and 38% of females literate. 18% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Places of interest
Araria town has a temple of Mata Kali, known as the Kali Mandir. This temple is reputed to be the largest Kali temple in Asia. A village to the 30 km north west of Araria town known as Dhanpura (Sahbajpur) has a Shakti temple known as the Chhinmastika temple. It is said that this place contains body parts of Goddess Shakti which fell off her body when Lord Shiva had been carrying her burnt body.
