In the United States, the most important viola competition is the Primrose International Viola Competition. The most recent competition took place in Los Angeles, in June 2014. Other important viola competitions are the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition, which takes place on the Isle of Mann in the United Kingdom, and the Munich ARD International competition, which awards prizes for viola on rotation with other instruments.
Locally, the American Viola Society and International Viola Society regional chapters hold smaller competitions that are very important as well, especially for younger players. Many colleges, conservatories, and youth orchestras also hold annual competitions for the viola.
