History

Area code 912 was split from area code 404 in 1954. When it was created, it covered the entire southern half of the state, including the cities of Savannah, Macon and Albany.

On August 1, 2000, area code 912 was split into three parts:

• The former western part of 912 is now Area code 229 and includes such cities as Albany,Bainbridge ,Valdosta, Tifton, Fitzgerald and Americus.

• The former northern part of 912 is now Area code 478 and includes such areas as Macon, Forsyth, Warner Robins, Dublin, Eastman and Milledgeville.

• Continued parts of old area code until August 1, 2001.
