In the UK, an area, supervised by the relevant local authority, in which development is very carefully considered so that the beauty of the landscape is not diminished. 6% of England and Wales is covered by AONBs. The Countryside and Rights of Way Act, 2000, empowers local authorities to establish a Conservation Board for their own AONB, in order to conserve and enhance the AONB and increase public understanding, and enjoyment, of its special qualities.
