Biography

The techno-pop trio Arkarna was led by vocalist and programmer Ollie Jacobs, whose musical career began when he was a teenager working at his father's London recording studio, Rollover, where he handled engineering and production duties on projects for Dreadzone, Deep Forest, Leftfield and others. Jacobs formed Arkarna with guitarist James Barnett, a onetime member of Lunarci, and guitarist Lalo Creme, the son of 10cc alum Lol Creme. Despite signing to WEA in 1995, the trio did not issue their debut single "House on Fire" until mid-1997, when it also appeared on the soundtrack to the big-budget flop Batman and Robin; their first LP, Fresh Meat, appeared a few months later. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

History

Formed in England in the mid-90s and debuting in 1997 with the album Fresh Meat, Arkarna were seen to be attempting to duplicate the transatlantic success of peers like The Prodigy and the Chemical Brothers. Jacobs, the group's programmer and vocalist, was by this time already an established studio hand, having worked as an engineer and producer in his father's London studios, Rollover, from the age of 14.

As a result, by the time he started the group, he had already mixed for artists ranging from Dread Zone and Leftfield to Deep Forest. However, Jacobs was not the only member of the band with "connections". Acoustic guitarist and backing vocalist Barnett was formerly a member of Lunarci, who recorded for Big Life Records and regularly appeared on the Megadog club scene. Lalo Creme, meanwhile, the final member to join the group, is the son of Lol Creme, of Godley and Creme fame. After playing guitar for a series of Trevor Horn sessions, he was directed to Rollover Studios where Jacobs and Barnett were in the process of crystallizing their musical ideas. The trio were signed to WEA Records by Clive Black and Raz Gold in June 1995, but had to wait over a year and a half before the release of their debut single "House on Fire" and the album Fresh Meat.

Music

Some of Arkarna's more popular songs are "House on Fire" and "Eat Me", both of which appear on Arkarna's debut album Fresh Meat. "House on Fire" is also well known as it appeared on the Batman & Robin soundtrack. Another song from Fresh Meat, "So Little Time", was to feature as the theme song for the similarly titled television series So Little Time starring Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Arkarna's second release titled The Family Album produced the singles "Skin" and "Rehab". Arkarna are currently on indefinite hiatus as its members work on other projects, however rumour has it there is a comeback project already planned for 2009.
