A Civil War division of the Union army. Organized after Fort Sumter and first commanded by George Thomas, the army was reorganized as the Army of the Ohio in late 1861. Another Army of the Cumberland was organized under William S. Rosecrans in October of 1862, and fought in the battles of Stones River (1862-63), Chickamauga, Chattanooga (both 1863), Nashville (1864), and others.
