One certain medication prescribed for migraines contains a
barbiturate (butalbital)
There are three formulations:
Fioricet - butalbital, acetaminophen, caffeine
Fioricet with codeine - butalbital, acetaminophen, caffeine,
codeine
Fiorinal - butalbital, aspirin, caffeine
No other medications prescribed for migraine contain
barbiturates.
Barbiturates as a drug class have been phased out nearly
completely by benzodiazepines (Xanax, Ativan, etc..), although some
barbiturates are still used to treat epilepsy (and even then, there
are many, many newer anti-epilepsy medications for a doctor to
choose from).
