It modifies it to the characteristics of the gene inserted such as a flower gene inserted into a pumpkin plant. The pumpkin plant will produce more pollens than it normally does. The gene has to be specific such as to a length of gene about the production of pollens which a pumpkin plant produces less. Specific genes are inserted into plant to make them more nutritional than it does normally so its more healthy to eat. Or the specific gene of a living thing may cause the plant to survive and grow in the cold depending on the living thing and the gene does.
