One of the four Vedas, consisting mostly of spells of black and white magic.

[Sanskrit Atharvavedaḥ : atharvā, priest + vedaḥ, sacred lore, knowledge, Veda.]


The fourth Veda (see Vedas) of India, probably composed later than the ṛg Veda, the Sāma Veda, and the Yajur Veda. The Atharva Veda consists of myths, magical formulae, spells, prayers, verses, and hymns and is named after Atharavan, a priest in charge of the worship of fire and soma (see Soma).
