At'ri-plex. A large genus of herbs and salt-tolerant shrubs of wide distribution. One is a secondary garden vegetable, several are troublesome weeds, and a number are cultivated in gardens in arid areas.
Description
Leaves mostly alternate, or rarely opposite, often mealy or whitish. Flowers inconspicuous, mostly unisexual, in simple or branched clusters.
How to Grow
Sow seeds after frost. When seedlings are 2 in. (5 cm) high, thin to 6 in. (15 cm) apart. The leaves can be used like spinach, and should be picked while young. Prefers warm weather.

. Stout, 1-3 ft. (30-90 cm) high. Leaves somewhat triangular or arrow-shaped, or heart-shaped; short-stalked, 4-5 in. (10.0-12.5 cm) long, varying from yellow-green to pale red. Asia. Cultivar 'Cupreatorosea' has coppery-red foliage; 'Rosea' has light red, veined foliage; 'Rubra' has blood-red to purplish foliage. Half-hardy annual.
