Au or Aue- earlier Ouwe in geography

Au or Aue is an old Germanic word for stream, larger rivulet, or smaller river, a cognate of several rivers Aa and with Å in Swedish. Therefore, Au or Aue (earlier Old High German ouw(i)a or MHG ouwe, owe) are used in connection with the names of many towns and places. Related are territories, named Gau or Gaue.
