The fruit of Solanum melongena, a native of south east Asia, widely cultivated and eaten as a vegetable, also known as egg-plant and (in west Africa) field egg. Half a medium-sized aubergine (140 g) is a source of folate and vitamin C; provides 2.8 g of dietary fibre; supplies 20 kcal (85 kJ).
