August Siccard von Siccardsburg
(1813–68)
Austrian architect. He studied in Vienna, where he met Eduard van der Nüll, with whom he later travelled to Italy, France, Germany, and England. They were appointed Professors at the Akademie in Vienna (1844), and thus influenced later Viennese architects. With van der Nüll he designed several Viennese buildings, including the Arsenal and KommandanturGebäude (1848–55), but they are best known for the Opera House on the Ringstrasse (1861–9) in a free Renaissance style. They planned a huge complex for the Vienna International Exhibition of 1873, eventually realized with buildings designed by Hasenauer. Siccard died shortly after van der Nüll took his own life.
