The autonomic nervous system (ANS) contributes to the stability
of the internal environment of the body (homeostasis). The
autonomic nervous system continuously makes adjustments to our body
to maintain equilibrium. The ANS regulates cardiac and smooth
muscles and glands. One example of the function of the autonomic
nervous system is when our pupils constrict when bright light is
shining into our eyes. There are two main branches of the autonomic
nervous system, the sympathetic and parasympathetic.
