One of 12 criteria that must be met to account for a Business Combination as a Pooling-Of-Interests. Autonomous means that a combining company must not have been a subsidiary or division of any other corporation within two years prior to the initiation date of the business combination. If a combining company is not autonomous, then the Purchase (Accounting) Method must be used. The initiation date is the date that stockholders are notified in writing of an exchange offer.
