Feeding the appetite of Scandinavia, Axel Johnson is one of the region's largest food importers and retailers. Through interests in affiliated units, the company operates discount and upscale supermarkets and department stores, imports and wholesales food for supermarkets and restaurants, and invests in small and midsized Swedish companies. Operating primarily in Sweden, Axel Johnson is one of four financially and legally independent corporations that are owned by Antonia Ax:son ("Ax:son" is an abbreviated form of Axelson) Johnson and make up the Axel Johnson Group. The group is a fourth-and-fifth-generation, family-owned business that evolved from A. Johnson & Co., a trading company founded in 1873.

Axel Johnson AB [1] is a family company in its fourth and fifth generations that builds and develops businesses within trade and trade-related services in the European market, with a main focus on the Nordic region. Group companies currently comprise Axel Johnson International, Novax, Servera, Svensk BevakningsTjänst, the Åhléns group and the partly owned listed companies Axfood and Mekonomen. The wholly and partly owned companies in the Axel Johnson AB group have annual sales of approximately SEK 50 billion and some 15,000 employees (2007).

Axel Johnson AB is one of three separate groups in the Axel Johnson Group, together with AxFast and the US company Axel Johnson Inc. In addition, the Axel Johnson Group has an ownership interest in Nordstjernan. The Axel Johnson Group is owned by Antonia Ax:son Johnson and her family.
