"Ayelet" does not exist in the formal English language. The
closest match to the word is "Eyalet" meaning, "Formerly, one of
the administrative divisions or provinces of the Ottoman Empire; --
now called a vilayet."
"Ayelet" is also a Hebrew word referring to a (female) deer,
hind, or gazelle. It is often encountered in the compound phrase
"Ayelet Ha'Shachar" literally meaning "gazelle of the dawn" and
referring to the morning star. Based on that, it can also be a
woman's name in Hebrew. Well known Ayelets include the novelist
Ayelet Waldman and the actress Ayelet Zurer.
