Azariah

Bible Guide: Azariah

("Yah has helped")

1. The son of Zadok the priest; One of the officers of King Solomon (I Kgs 4:2).

It is not clear from the text whether the attribute "the priest" refers to him or to Zadok. He may be identical with Azariah No. 5.

2. The son of Nathan; the superintendent of the 12 regional governors who "provided food for the king and his household" (I Kgs 4:7).

3. The son of Ethan: descended from Zerah of the tribe of Judah.

4. The son of Jehu, of the sons of Onam; descended from Jerahmeel, of the tribe of Judah. (I Chr 2:38-39).

5. A Levite descended from Aaron; the son of Ahimaaz and grandson of Zadok; the father of Johanan and grandfather of Azariah the priest (I Chr 6:10). He may be identified with Azariah No. 1.

6. A Levite descended from Aaron; the son of Johanan and father of Amariah. He served as priest in the Temple in the days of Solomon (I Chr 6:10). He is most probably identical with Azariah No. 5.

7. The son of Zephaniah and father of Joel; a Levite of the line of Kohath. An ancestor of the Levites who performed their musical duties in the Temple (I Chr 6:36). In I Chronicles 6:24, he is called Uzziah.

8. The son of Hilkiah. He is listed among he priests who lived in Jerusalem in the days of Nehemiah (I Chr 9:11). In the parallel list in Nehemiah 11:11, the name of the son of Hilkiah is Seraiah, which may be an interchanged name (See AZARIAH No. 21).

9. A prophet, the son of Oded. He encouraged King Asa of Judah to initiate a religious reform (II Chr 15:1).

10. The son of Jeroham; one of the officers who conspired to dethrone Athaliah (II Chr 23:1).

11. The son of Obed; one of the officers who conspired to dethrone Athaliah (II Chr 23:1). He is probably not to be identified with Azariah No.10 since they had different fathers.

12. The son of King Jehoshaphat of Judah. The name appears twice in the list of the six sons of Jehoshaphat (II Chr 21:2). It has been suggested that the second Azariah should read Uzziah; in Hebrew the second one is Azaryahu. He and his brothers were slain by their elder brother Jehoram, who succeeded their father as king of Judah (II Chr 21:1).

13. The chief priest in the days of King Uzziah of Judah; he headed a group of priests who opposed the king's religious activities and defended the status of the house of Aaron (II Chr 26:17, 20).

14. The son of Johanan; one of the Ephraimite chiefs who persuaded the people of Israel to release the men of Judah whom they had captured during the war against Ahaz (II Chr 28:12).

15. A Kohathite Levite; his son, Joel, was among the Levites who cleansed the Temple in the days of King hezekiah.

16. A Levite. The son of Jehalelel, one of the Merarites who cleansed the Temple at the time of King Hezekiah (II Chr 29:12).

17. A priest of the house of Zadok; the "chief priest" in the time of King Hezekiah (II Chr 31:10). In II Chronicles 31:13, he is called "the ruler of the house of God". He may be identical with the son of Hilkiah named in the genealogical list of Aaron's descendants in I Chronicles 6:14; if so, he is identical with Azariah No.18. (II Chr 31:10, 13).

18. The son of Hilkiah and father of Seraiah (I Chr 6:13-14; Ezra 7:1). Some identify him with Azariah No. 17.

19. The son of Meraioth and father of Amariah (Ezra 7:3).

20. The son of Maaseiah. He was among those who repaired the wall of Jerusalem in the days of Nehemiah (Neh 3:23-24).

21. One of the leaders of the people who returned from the Exile with Zerubbabel (Neh 7:7). In the parallel list in Ezra 2:2, he is called or replaced by Seraiah.

22. One of the Levites who stood beside Ezra and expounded the Law to the people (Neh 8:7).

23. One of those who witnessed the sealing of the covenant. In Nehemiah 12:1, he is called Ezra.

24. The son of Hoshaiah. One of the captains of the armed bands who, with Johanan son of Kareah and the remnant of Judah, ignored Jeremiah's counsel and left for Egypt (Jer 43:2). The Hebrew in Jeremiah 42:1 names him Jezaniah.

25. One of the leading men of Judah who was appointed to take part in the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem (Neh 12:33).

26. King of Judah, better known as Uzziah (See UZZIAH).

27. An alternate name for King Ahaziah of Judah, given in some versions of the Bible. (See AHAZIAH No. 2).

28. The original name of one of David's companions. He was given the Babylonian name Abed-Nego when he was taken into captivity (Dan 1:6-7, 11, 19; 2:17).
