BAP System

The BAP System is a variation to the existing point system in the game of chess. The first known use of the existing point system where a win gets a full point, a draw gets a half point and a loss gets zero points is thought to have been in Germany around 1867.

The BAP System is designed to make draws illogical for at least one of the players and to make winning more than twice as desirable as drawing. It achieves this by the following point allocation:

  • Black win = 3 points
  • White win = 2 points
  • Black draw = 1 point
  • White draw = 0 point
  • Any loss = 0 points

To date, only about half a dozen tournaments have used BAP and no GM tournament has utilized it yet. This October the GM Slugfest will be held in Bellevue, WA and will be the first BAP based tournament for GM's. While the results so far have been promising for BAP, until it is proven with GM play, widespread adoption is unlikely.
