Biography

Heralded as evidence of the growing popularity of tradition-rooted British music, Barely Works was together for a brief five years. Named Best Newcomer of 1990 by FolkRoots, their energetic mix of bluegrass, folk, ska, reggae, rock, pop, jazz, Latin, Celtic, country, funk, and African influences is recalled fondly more than a decade later. Performing their debut concert at the Cricketers Pub at the Oval in London, on November 30, 1988, Barely Works soon signed with the London-based Cooking Vinyl label. The group went on to release three impressive albums -- Glow, Big Beat, and Don't Mind Walking -- before performing their final show at the York Art Centre in 1993. Although most of the eight-piece group went their separate ways, Sarah Allen and Chris Thompson have continued to work together as a duo. ~ Craig Harris, All Music Guide
