Barneveld (
pronunciation (help·info)) is a town and a municipality in the province of Gelderland in the Netherlands. The population of the municipality was 50,028 in 2005, the town having a population of 28,147[1].
Barneveld has become famous in the Netherlands for poultry farming and egg production and has a breed of chicken, the Barnevelder, named after it. There is a statue of a large golden egg on the A1 between Barneveld and Terschuur.[2]
The Barnevelder is a medium heavy breed of chicken that is a cross of 19th century Dutch landrace chickens with Asian breeds imported to Europe in the mid-late 19th century such as the Brahma, Cochin, Croad Langshan and Malay.
Barneveld has 2 train stations - Barneveld Centrum railway station and Barneveld Noord railway station.
A notable event in the history of Barneveld is the story of Jan van Schaffelaar, a cavalry commander in the Hook and Cod wars who jumped off the church tower in 1482 in order to save the lives of his men.
Due to the central geographic location of the City and its close proximity to major transport routes Barenveld has become a foundry for innovative industry, such as Baan BVand Paperfoam BV. Barneveld is known worldwide as the cradle of the Baan Company, founded there in 1978 by Jan Baan. Baan was a longtime leader in the ERP market.
