The Batsheva Dance Company is an honored[1] dance company based in Tel Aviv, Israel. It was founded by Martha Graham and Baroness Batsheva De Rothschild, after whom it was named, in 1964.
Ohad Naharin has been its in house choreographer since 1990. Its General Manager and Co-Artistic Director is Naomi Fortis wife of the musician Rami Fortis. Some notable participants include Anna Sokolow, Gary Bertini, and Robert Cohan.
Critical Assessment
There have been several protests at the appearance of the Batsheva Dance company in the UK and the US. The dance company is on tour paid for by the Israeli government[2], roughly 50% of the company's budget is paid by the Israeli government, and the dance group prides itself in its role as "Israel's ambassador". It is for this reason that Paul Ben-Itzak, the editor of Dance Insider, has called for a boycott of this dance company[3].
