The Spion Kop, apparently in the early history of Anfield there was just a steep hill which reminded Boar War veterans of the Spion Kop in South Africa, the scene of a famous battle. Christened by the locals, the name stuck.

Liverpool is not the only British football club to have a Spion Kop or Kop but it's certainly the most famous and probably the first, all Liverpool Football Club supporters are known as Kopites.
