Roots & Influences
All Battletoads games owe something to the original arcade version of Double Dragon. The fighting moves and techniques are similar. This similarity led to Battletoads/Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team which was released for the Super Nintendo, theReview: Overall
Released the same year as Battletoads/Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team, Battletoads in Battlemaniacs is a much better game. While Battletoads/Double Dragon looks and sounds like a recycled NES cartridge, this game took a giant leap forward for the Battletoads series in all areas of play. Although the levels are designed roughly the same as the NES version, the characters in this 16-bit remake are huge, the music rocks and rolls, and the visuals are superb. For an example of the graphic excellence in this game, check out the bonus round after level two. The reflective floor you glide over is simply stunning. For a side-scrolling punch and kick game, Battletoads in Battlemaniacs is chock-full of variety and humor. In level one, great-looking skeletons worthy of a Ray Harryhausen movie attack you from all sides. When you hit the skeletons, their heads pop up, fly through the air and then reattach themselves. When one of the giant Psyko Pigs bursts onto the scene, the Battlemaniacs' eyes bug way out of their heads. Each level contains its own unique brand of excitement and fun. In level four you can even grab onto giant snakes and ride them.
The two-player version of this game is really neat. You and a friend can play where your hits hurt each other, or you can play where you can't even touch one another. If you're really good, you can use each other to create all-new team special moves to combat your enemies. Whether played alone or with a friend, this is one of the best Battletoads games out there.
