refer to this country in southern Africa as simply "Botswana," the

I'm assuming you mean Bechuanaland instead of Bechuandland.If so
then Great Britain was in control of the at area of Africa at the
time. Bechuanaland was eventually split into two with the British
Bechuanalnad on the northern half and the Bechuanaland Protectorate
on the other.
