History
Beijing Normal University has a history of more than 100 years, which is almost as long as the history of modern Chinese education. The University developed from the Department of Education of the Capital Metropolitan University (京师大学堂) and was established in 1902 under the concept of establishing a school prioritizing teacher education, which effectively initiated teacher training in Chinese higher education. After several mergers and reformations since 1949, especially in the 1980s, Beijing Normal University is currently undergoing rapid development[citation needed]. The University's history is an epitome of the development of modern teacher training[citation needed] and Chinese higher education. Today Beijing Normal University has been one of China's top comprehensive research-oriented universities[citation needed]. Also, Beijing Normal University is the first university in China that has been authorized to grant doctoral degrees in educational technology.
Beijing Normal University lays great emphasis on exchange and cooperation with educational institutions nationally, regionally and internationally.
Throughout its more than one hundred year development, Beijing Normal University has always been developing along the route of self-improvement[citation needed]. It has never stopped the efforts in deepening educational reform and has steadily raised the level and quality of education[citation needed]. In addition, BNU has attached great importance to academic development and shaped itself into a moderately-scoped, reasonably-structured, diversified and comprehensive university. BNU is committed to the development of research, increasing research funding rapidly and achieving a number of high level research outcomes.
Jiang Zemin, former President of the People's Republic of China, has demonstrated the direction for the further development of Beijing Normal University in his speech [1] delivered at the celebration of BNU Centennial Anniversary. We believe that BNU will become a comprehensive, research-oriented and internationally reputable university with the specialization in teacher training, educational science and psychology[citation needed].
Beijing Normal University is a member university of the "Project 211" and "Education Revival Project." The university is recognized as a key institution by both the Ministry of Education and Beijing Municipality and received financial support from the two institutions.
Historically, students in Beijing Normal University played a significant role in patriotic and democratic movements, particularly in the May Fourth Movement in 1919 and the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. In a New York Times article, it was described as "one of the most progressive institutions" in China [2].
