Benjamin Louis Eulalie de Bonneville

US Military Dictionary: Benjamin Louis Eulalie de Bonneville

Bonneville, Benjamin Louis Eulalie de (1796-1878) Union army officer, born in or near Paris. Bonneville is the subject of Washington Irving's Adventures of Captain Bonneville (1837). Some historians speculate that Bonneville may have been a government agent sent to spy on the British in Oregon, based on the army's willingness to grant him a leave of absence in 1832 to engage in the fur trade in the northern Rockies, the ease of his reinstatement, and various statements he made to his superiors in letters.
