Commission of an offense where the person acted, at least in part, with ill will, hatred, or
bias toward, and with a purpose to intimidate, an individual or group because of race, color, religion, sexual orientation, or ethnicity. Offenses such as assault, harassment, intimidation, or
criminal mischief may have enhanced sentences imposed upon the perpetrator if it is proved that the act was a bias crime. See N.J.S.A. 2C:44- 3e. Examples of hate or bias crimes include defacing a Jewish cemetery with symbols of anti-Semitism; throwing rocks through the windows of Chinese restaurants; or attacking persons believed to be gay. The fbi collects statistics relating to such crimes.
